Sports Lighting

The considerations required for sports lighting are as numerous as the sports we play. LDP has the expertise to tackle the illumination requirements of the smallest sports field to bespoke sports facilities and stadiums and everything in between.

Our Sports Lighting Services

LDP have been, and are currently, engaged throughout New Zealand and Australia for the design, specification, resource consent application and contract administration of numerous sports field and stadium lighting projects.

Some of the recent larger scale sports lighting projects that Team LDP have involvement with include; FMG Stadium Hamilton, Avantidrome Cambridge, Eden Park Auckland, North Harbour Hockey Stadium Auckland, Yarrow Stadium New Plymouth, Temuka Alpine Energy Stadium Timaru, WACA Ground Stadium Perth, Stadium Australia Sydney.

Sports Lighting Projects

Commonwealth Games Velodrome

LDP’s personnel were integral in the electrical and illumination services design, specification and supervision of this world class cycling training & competition facility. Design was to the exacting UCI standard, including TV broadcast lighting considerations and requirements.

Coastlands Aquatic Centre

Aquatic Centres demand a special skill set, reinforced by experience, to ensure that all equipment is appropriately selected during design to mitigate the corrosive effects of heated humid chlorinated air and water. Electrical safety is particular concern due to step potential and exposed metal parts. Also, care is required when penetrating the vapour barrier to avoid introducing corrosive elements to the building structure. LDP utilised its extensive experience in this highly specialised field and were responsible for the design and observation of all the electrical services, including power, lighting, security & communications.

Salmiya Park, Kuwait

Lighting design & specification suitable for a variety of sporting codes for this new complex.

Waitakere Stadium, Auckland

LDP were appointed to provide expert advice for the notified Resource Consent hearing, the performance lighting specification, assist with technical tender analyses and review the installation for Resource Consent compliance.

Lowe Walker Stadium (Okara Park), Whangarei

LDP were appointed to review the proposed sports lighting following complaints from residents on glare. Our recommendations were adopted resulting in improved playing and spectator conditions and significant reductions on spill light and glare to the local residents.

Eden Park, Auckland

LDP were appointed by Auckland City Council to review the proposed lighting at Eden Park.

Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland

LDP were engaged to review tenders after the stadium management had received widely varying prices from interested parties. Our assistance provided the stadium management with a solution that met their budget whilst meeting a very tight programme in time for the first NRL game against the Brisbane Broncos. We were subsequently appointed to design the lighting for the adjoining No 2 Athletic stadium (for non-televised use).

Rugby Park, New Plymouth

Following complaints from surrounding residents about the initial lighting installed at the stadium, LDP were asked to review the proposed upgrade of lighting and to provide design advice. This resulted in innovatively extending the height of the lighting head frames on the existing columns in conjunction with utilising the new grandstand that produced a superior performance and virtually eliminated spill light for the nearby residents.

Rugby Stadium, Hamilton

Immediately following on from the successful review of the cricket stadium lighting, we were asked to review the Rugby stadium, which at the time was well advanced in construction. Working with the architect and the lighting supplier, we went through a considerable re-aiming and potential shielding process in order to resolve the issues of low illuminance at the in-goal areas and high spill light to surrounding residential areas. Although a compromise due to the limitations of the construction, the revised design layout has provided a workable solution with improved light at the in-goal areas and reduced spill light to surrounding areas.

WestpacTrust Cricket Stadium, Hamilton

LDP was called in by Hamilton City Council & the regional cricket administrators to resolve issues with the proposed lighting that was being undertaken as a design build contract. Our recommendations were adopted which also resulted in fewer luminaires (lights) thus saving considerable money, as well as having a workable lighting solution.

North Harbour Stadium, Albany, Auckland

LDP was responsible for all sports lighting within the main stadium to meet international colour television broadcast, international and provincial level playing (non-televised) club and training and adjacent external playing fields for NZ soccer and FIFA standards and club training levels.

Western Springs Stadium, Auckland

Design and supervision of major lighting upgrade for the televised broadcast of motor racing on outer circuit and rugby on the inner field.

North Shore Events Centre, Auckland-ongoing

Lighting design for the 2009 U19 basketball world championship, 2007 U21 World Table tennis championship & 2008 & 2009 NZ National badminton championships. (We have designed and developed a unique flexible lighting system that enables the centre to easily configure the lighting for a variety of sporting codes, suitable for club and televised major tournaments.

Trafalgar Park, Nelson

Advice to Nelson City Council on the environmental effects for the upgrade of the stadium for the Rugby World Cup and working with the Park’s lighting supplier on how to achieve the required result.

Eden Park, Auckland

LDP was responsible for the review of the lighting for Auckland Council and engaged by the Eden Park Trust Board for advice, peer review and recommendations to achieve quality lighting for the 2011 Rugby World Cup and International Cricket World Cup for HDTV broadcasts.

Coastlands Aquatic Centre, Kapiti Coast, New Zealand

Aquatic Centres demand a special skill set, reinforced by experience, to ensure that all equipment is appropriately selected during design to mitigate the corrosive effects of heated humid chlorinated air and water. Electrical safety is particular concern due to step potential and exposed metal parts. Also, care is required when penetrating the vapour barrier to avoid introducing corrosive elements to the building structure. LDP utilised its extensive experience in this highly specialised field and were responsible for the design and observation of all the electrical services, including power, lighting, security & communications.

Alpine Aqualand, Queenstown

This project encompassed most of the primary elements of lighting design challenges within a single space – technical performance, visual enhancement and creative effects.
The client wanted a lighting solution to enhance patrons’ enjoyment of the facility while providing a safe environment using equipment suited to the corrosive pool air. The solution needed to be cost effective, energy efficient and suited to the long term owner.
